MARSYA – Contemporary Balkan Playing & Singing

Band Marsya is formed in 1999 wishing to present music of Balkans in special and contemporary way. Its repertory is maid of old songs and dances, and with time also original pieces. Marsya performed on all relevant festivals in the country as Bemus, Belef, Kanjiza, Serbia Sounds Global, Exit... Besides solo concerts Marsya appears on compilation “Serbia Sounds Global 2” and in November 2003 the first album "Visoko drvo" is published for PGP-RTS.

“To be musically exact is the most difficult task and goal of any musician-author. When the sound selected is original native Balkan music, it is possible to make it true or exact if performed by musicians cultivated or particularly dedicated to authentically performing old songs and dances. Marsya, an ensemble consisting of five experientially and stylistically highly different musicians, will be genuine or on the right path only if they admire native music rather than imitating its performance. If they are in contact with the music, but in their own time, if they keep its authentic substance no matter how distant its transposition, finally if they express its beauty through their own ethics.” Anja Djordjevic
