Band
Shira Utfila (on Hebrew song and prayer)
is formed in year 2000 in Belgrade.
It performed in several different
liturgy, paraliturgy as well as folk
music projects of Sephardic Jews.
Using melodies from different Jew
music traditions – Balkans,
Middle East, North Africa, Turkey,
Spain… - and placing them into
new arrangements, Shira Utfila today
has very rich material of songs sang
mainly in Hebrew and Ladino (Spanish-Hebrew),
but also in Turkish, Judeo-Arab (Arabian-Hebrew),
Greek and Serbian. This band uses
maqams i.e. Middle Eastern scales
with quart notes, which is extremely
rear for the area.
This band had concerts and performed
on several festivals also in Bulgaria,Romania,Croatia,Greece…It
has three published albums :
“Nagila Alleluia” (Let
us be joyous and praise God) turned
to music tradition of Middle Eastern
Jews, published in 2001
“Arvit shel Shabbat” (synagogal
evening service for Shabbat) represents
rich and specific traditions of melodies
sang in Belgrade and Sarajevo; published
in 2001 and is all acapella.
“At Thy Gates, O, Jerusalem”
(CD431432) includes little known and
rarely presented songs of historical
Jew communities as Yemen, Aleppo,
Damascus, Baghdad, communities of
Magreb, Istanbul, Thessalonica, Izmir,
